U.S. District Judge John Kane ruled Tuesday that Nathan Dunlap was competently represented, fairly tried and duly sentenced to death.

Dunlap was convicted of killing three teenagers and a mother of two at a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant.

Among other arguments, Dunlap said that his defense team inadequately represented him by failing to present an alternative defense strategy at sentencing, which Kane said he couldn't imagine given the details of the case.

Dunlap previously lost three appeals before the Colorado Supreme Court. The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear his case.

Colorado's last execution was in 1997.
