The two-alarm fire started Friday afternoon in the backyard of a home in the 16000 block of East Lehigh Circle in Aurora.
The windy and dry conditions allowed the fire to spread, Aurora Fire Captain Allen Robnett said.
Robnett says one of the homes was occupied by three disabled adults, but they managed to get out safely. The other home was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
A neighbor is being hailed as the hero for hearing the fire, calling 911 and getting the disabled adults and residents out of the home.
The homes sustained smoke and fire damage.
